War Horse

September 14, 2012

War Horse is, simply put, the best movie i’ve seen all year.  And i’ve seen many.  Adapted from a novel by Michael Morpugo, this majestic World War I drama centers on Devon lad Albert and his steadfast horse, Joey, whose faithful bond cannot be shaken – even when Joey is sold to the cavalry and sent off to France.  I was surprised that the reviews on Netflix were so mixed.  I’m not sure what these people were expecting.  Get a life.  The progression of vignettes along the way from Albert’s farm, to the French cavalry, through the german front and on to the field hospital kept this long two and a half hour movie on pace.  The costumes were authentic to the period.  An interesting balance between the idyllic pastoral countryside of Devon and the gateway to hell at the front.  As an animal lover, certain scenes were difficult to watch, but reassuringly knowing that none were harmed (albeit a million were during WWI).  If this heartfelt drama doesn’t move you, you are, indeed, made of stone.  This is Steve R Morse in Fort Lauderdale, at the movies.
