Carlisle Winery – Three Birds 2010

Mike and Kendall Officer have been making small handcrafted releases of award winning wines for years.  Their richly extracted big bold reds have graced the cover of Wine Spectator on numerous occasions.  Carlisle wines are pretty much available by mailing list only (the current wait time is five years), but there is a wine bar in Wilton Manors called the Naked Grape (www.nakedgrapewinebar.com) that always seems to have a secret stash available.    Last night we tried the 2010 Three Birds.  With only 250 cases made, this is a treat that we almost never get to enjoy.  The three birds refer to the three rhone style grapes (grenache, syrah, mouvedre) that make up the wine.  The grenache gives it power and fleshiness, the syrah contributes depth and complexity, and the mouvedre lends a subtle perfuminess to the spice box component that is always present.  Think spicy cherries with a bit of loamy earth.  Some vintages have a charcuterie flavor, but the 2010 is pure primal fruit.  It is a medium to dense dark red garnet color.  Great mid-palate and long finish.  It’s worth a trip to the Naked Grape to see what Carlisle wines they have.  This is Steve R Morse in Fort Lauderdale with another cool wine review.
