Trefethen Chardonnay Oak Knoll District 2004

February 23, 2012

Trefethen was one of the original Napa wineries that won accolades at the 1976 Paris exhibition.  Some even say th 76 was the best chardonnay in the world at the time.  We enjoyed the 2004 last night courtesy of Gerry and Lucy.  A beautiful cheese board got the evening started with a bang, but what I remember most about the Trefethen was how it paired perfectly with cotswold cheese.  The creamy, herby texture married well with the buttery undertones and lemon-drop candy profile.  Gold in color, fat in the mouth, but not overoaked, the 2004 still had a nice core of acidity to support the tropical fruit.   We thought we were drinking an old Meursault.  Another memorable wine experience by Steve R Morse in beautiful sunny Fort Lauderdale.
