Carlisle Zinfandel Gold Mine Ranch Vineyard 2009

February 21, 2012

Carlisle Winery is one of the truly exceptional Zinfandel producers in the Dry Creek Valley appellation of Northern California.  It always wins coveted awards, has graced the cover of Wine Spectator more than once, and has a waiting list of about five years.  With miniscule production, Mike and Kendall Officer always have their work cut out for them in deciding the allocation list for their releases.  I’ve been a fan of Carlisle for years and today I finally got up enough nerve to open the first bottle of the 2009 offering, the 2009 Zinfandel Gold Mine Ranch Vineyard.  What was once an active gold mine long since abandoned, the original vines from 1914 still thrive and produce a tiny 1.5 ton per acre of incredibly concentrated fruit.  The color is a medium dark ruby-garnet.  Fragrant, perfumed aromas of cherries, red currants, and anise lead to similar flavors on the palate.  It definitely has a sturdy structure to hold all that fruit.  Lively acidity and tannin interwoven with tones of minerality typical of Dry Creek frame this nicely.  15.2% alcohol and only 300 cases produced.  Some people prefer their zinfandel with BBQ or pot roast.  I had this one with cigars and netflix.  This is Steve R Morse reporting to you live from Fort Lauderdale,  or Zinfandel east as we like to call it.
