Deerfield 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel

February 19, 2012

Steve R Morse, wine reviewer in Fort Lauderdale, shares his views on Deerfield Ranch Winery.  If you like cult wines, check out Deerfield Ranch’s Old Vine Zinfandel.  Dry Creek Valley is the best place for zinfandel, and the vines used in this hedonistic bomb are over 120 years old.  They are dry-farmed giving it incredible concentration.   The Buchignani and Garcia families keep a watchful eye over this vineyard that yields sparse, intensely flavored fruit producing a wine like no other.  Specialized vinification techniques accentuate layered complexity, smoothes the edges, and produces a long, long, did I say long… finish.  Only 500 cases are produced.    What was once a well kept secret due to miniscule production, the Deerfield Old Vine Zinfandel is finely getting noticed.  A 95 point score from Wine Enthusiast didn’t hurt either.  I was lucky enough to “come across” a bottle of the 2004 OVZ this week.  2004 produced only 300 cases.  Known as being a ripe vintage, and weighing in at 17.5% alcohol, you would think that this monster had already peaked by now.  Wow, wow, wow!  Yes, get some air into this puppy, but what a payoff.  After a few hours decanting, not a trace of heat, just pure fruit.  Boysenberries and blackberries interwoven with a briary core envelope your tongue and coat the palate.  Paired with chocolate truffles, this wine clearly personifies cult wine status.
